Biography

Pathology Associates of Princeton, a Sonic Healthcare Anatomic Pathology Practice, is pleased to have Stephen Mercer, M.D., Ph.D., join its dynamic medical staff. Dr. Mercer has an extensive academic, teaching, and medical professional background.

Dr. Mercer received his Bachelor of Science degree in exercise science, graduating with distinction, summa cum laude, from the University of Texas in Arlington. Here, he also received his Master of Science degree in biology. He went on to pursue his medical degree and Ph.D. concurrently at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, graduating with honors. He began his postgraduate training with an anatomic pathology residency at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, where he also completed a dermatopathology fellowship.

During his post-graduate training and into his professional career, Dr. Mercer held many teaching positions. He was an undergraduate teaching assistant, graduate teaching assistant, and a senior research technician at the University of Texas at Arlington. He also served as a resident instructor for both pathology and dermatopathology courses at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He was an adjunct clinical instructor of the Sophie Davis School of Medicine at the City University of New York in New York City before going on to become clinical instructor of dermatology and pathology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

Over the years, Dr. Mercer has developed extensive professional medical experience, serving as the director of dermatopathology at Kessel Dermatology in Hamilton Square, New Jersey, before joining Pathology Associates of Princeton as a staff dermatopathologist.

He is the recipient of numerous academic and professional honors and awards and holds medical research publications and articles in peer-reviewed medical journals and textbooks, in addition to numerous abstracts and book chapters. He is an active member, and fellow of the American Society of Dermatopathology, and the College of American Pathologists.

Dr. Mercer holds full medical licensure and is board certified in anatomic pathology, and dermatopathology.
