Biography

CytoPath, a Sonic Healthcare anatomic pathology practice, is privileged to include Erik Joseph Kouba, M.D., as a part of its dynamic medical staff. Dr. Kouba is a board-certified pathologist who has robust professional and academic experience and an impressive record of peer-reviewed publications.

Dr. Kouba completed his medical degree at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, NC. Dr. Kouba completed two residencies. The first was a general and urological surgery residency completed at the Stanford University Medical Center in Stanford, California. His second was an anatomic and clinical pathology residency completed at University of Alabama-Birmingham. He completed three fellowships. The first was a genitourinary pathology fellowship at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, Indiana. He then completed a surgical pathology fellowship and a cytopathology fellowship, both at the University of Alabama-Birmingham.

Dr. Kouba has extensive professional experience. Prior to medical school, he worked as a process development and chemical engineer. After earning his medical degree, he has held a variety of positions. He has sat on multiple tumor boards, including a multidisciplinary and genitourinary tumor board at University of Alabama-Birmingham, a genitourinary tumor board at the Indiana School of Medicine, and currently sits on thoracic, GI/colorectal multidisciplinary tumor boards. Dr. Kouba has held multiple instructor assignments. He was an instructor of autopsy pathology for medical students, histology for medical students, and cytopathology and surgical pathology, each at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. He was also an instructor of genitourinary pathology at the Indiana School of Medicine. He serves as the lead pathologist for the ACS National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer and the clinical laboratory medical director for Putnam General Hospital in Eatonton, GA. Prior to joining CytoPath, Dr. Kouba was a pathologist at Associated Pathologists, dba PathGroup, in Brentwood, TN. During the same time, he was also staff pathologist at Associated Pathologists at Medical Center of Georgia, Department of Pathology in Macon, GA.

Dr. Kouba has numerous publications including peer-reviewed journal articles and abstracts along with a number of presentations. He has published peer-reviewed articles and abstracts in a variety of prestigious journals, including the American Journal of Clinical Pathology, JAMA Oncology, Modern Pathology, and Journal of Urology, among others. He is also a peer reviewer for the Journal of Urology.

Dr. Kouba is a member of a number of professional medical societies. These include the American Medical Association, American Society of Cytopathology, United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, and the College of American Pathologists,among others.

Dr. Kouba holds full medical licensure and is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology by the American Board of Pathology.
