Biography

University Pathologists, a Sonic Healthcare Anatomic Pathology Practice, is privileged to include Mirela Stancu, M.D., as a member of its dynamic medical staff. Dr. Stancu has an extensive academic and medical professional background.

Dr. Stancu received her medical degree from the Carol Davila University of Medicine in Bucharest, Romania, where she later completed a medical internship and an anatomic pathology residency before relocating to the United States. 

Dr. Stancu resumed her postgraduate training with an anatomic and clinical pathology residency at the Brooklyn Hospital Center in New York, followed by another anatomic and clinical pathology residency at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Subsequently, she completed a gastrointestinal and surgical pathology fellowship. She later finished a hematopathology fellowship at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center of Harvard University in Brookline, Massachusetts. She went on to complete a surgical oncologic pathology fellowship at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center of the University of Texas in Houston.

Upon completion of her postgraduate training, Dr. Stancu transitioned into key positions in hospitals, universities, and practices across the Northeast. She was a staff pathologist at Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence, Rhode Island, and a medical director at Westerly Hospital of Westerly, RI, Gastroenterology Associates in Providence, and William Backus Hospital in Norwich Connecticut. She was on the Cancer Committee, the Infectious Control Committee, and the Hartford Hospital Pathology Council.  She was an instructor of pathology and worked in the physiology laboratory at Harvard Medical School. She then transitioned to her position as a staff pathologist with University Pathologists.

Over the years, Dr. Stancu has developed extensive academic and professional experience. She holds medical research publications, articles, and abstracts in peer-reviewed medical journals and textbooks, in addition to giving oral and poster presentations at national and international medical conferences. She is an active member of the American Society for Clinical Pathology, and the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology.

Dr. Stancu holds full medical licensure and is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology, and hematopathology.
