Biography

GPA Laboratories, a Sonic Healthcare anatomic pathology practice, is privileged to include Haiyan Lu, M.D., Ph.D., as a part of its dynamic medical staff. Dr. Lu is a board-certified pathologist who brings considerable experience and an extensive publication history to her position.

Dr. Lu earned her medical degree in clinical medicine at Harbin Medical University in Harbin, China. This was followed by a Master of Medical Science degree in the neurology department at The Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University. She earned her doctoral degree in the neuroscience department of Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University in Beijing. Following her doctorate, she completed a postdoctoral research fellowship in the neuroscience department of Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. She served her residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Institute of Cleveland Clinic. While at the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Institute, Dr. Lu also completed a research fellowship in anatomic and clinical pathology, a clinical fellowship, and a gastrointestinal, hepatic, and pancreaticobiliary pathology fellowship.

Dr. Lu has held several professional appointments following her postgraduate training. Prior to joining GPA Laboratories, she was the program director of the surgical pathology acting internship program at Wake Forest School of Medicine and the program director of the general surgical pathology fellowship program at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She was also an assistant professor in the pathology department of Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Dr. Lu has published over 40 peer-reviewed manuscripts and abstracts. She has been published in journals such as Modern Pathology, the Annals of Diagnostic Pathology, American Journal of Clinical Pathology, and the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology, among others. She has presented abstracts at meetings of the College of American Pathologists and the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, among others. Dr. Lu is an editorial reviewer for the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Journal of Experiential Medicine, The Journal of Neuroscience, Glia, Canadian Journal of Neurological Sciences, and the Neuroscience Bulletin.

Dr. Lu is a member of numerous professional societies, including the Gastrointestinal Pathology Society, College of American Pathologists, American Society for Clinical Pathology, and the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, among others.

Dr. Lu holds full medical licensure and is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology.
