Biography

Arizona Dermatopathology, a Sonic Healthcare Dermatopathology Practice, is privileged to include Richard A. Bernert, M.D., as a member of its dynamic medical staff. Dr. Bernert has an extensive academic and professional background, complemented by distinguished military service.

Dr. Bernert graduated from the University of Arizona in Tucson with a Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology and immunology. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Arizona College of Medicine, where he subsequently completed a five-year residency in anatomic and clinical pathology. He later completed a dermatopathology fellowship at the Thomas Jefferson Medical College under the esteemed dermatopathologist, Dr. A. Bernard Ackerman.

While attending medical school, Dr. Bernert was an active member of the military, serving as a member of the United States Air Force Medical Corp at Maxwell and Lackland Air Force Bases in Texas. He was recognized as a distinguished graduate from the Commissioned Officer Training School and achieved the rank of major before leaving the Air Force after ten years of service. He was on the dermatopathology staff at South Texas Dermatopathology Laboratory in San Antonio, Texas, before he became partner and associate pathologist at Clin-Path Associates in Tempe, Arizona. Since 2009, he has been the medical director of Arizona Dermatopathology.

Dr. Bernert has worked extensively with the College of American Pathologists, for which he has served on the council on practice and education, house of delegates and board of governors. He has received numerous awards, most notably the award for Teacher of the Year from the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC) Pathology Training Program. He also served as a peer-reviewer for the Archives of Dermatology and the Journal of the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology. He regularly teaches courses and assists with curriculum development for dermatology, pathology, and dermatopathology students.

Dr. Bernert belongs to several professional medical organizations, including the American Medical Association and the College of American Pathologists. He has coauthored numerous articles and delivered many presentations to both national and international medical societies.

Dr. Bernert holds full medical licensure and is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology, and dermatopathology.
