Dr. Werstein earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Illinois Chicago, where he graduated summa cum laude. Subsequently, he received his Master of Education degree and enrolled in medical school. During his academic career, he was given the Otto Saphir Award in Pathology from the University of Illinois Chicago’s Department of Pathology for demonstrating outstanding interest and excellence in the specialty.

Dr. Werstein also gained top honors and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, graduating with his medical degree from the College of Medicine at the University of Illinois Chicago.

Dr. Werstein completed his postgraduate training at Oregon Health and Science University; first as an anatomic and clinical pathology resident, and then as a breast and gynecologic pathology fellow.

Dr. Werstein has contributed to research that covers many areas in pathology. In his role as a visiting research specialist, at the Pilipenko Lab in UIC’s Department of Pediatrics, he investigated the replication of hepatitis A virus in cell culture using a subgenomic replicon model. Subsequently, he secured a lab technician role at the Urbanek Lab at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, before transitioning to the Research Assistant role. Here, he gave an analysis of whole-genome sequencing data in the study of PCOS genetics, which was added to a publication in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

Dr. Werstein serves as a member of numerous professional societies and boards, including the American Society for Clinical Pathology, the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, and the Oregon Pathology Association. He has authored two peer-reviewed articles and has given poster presentations at national and regional trade shows and conferences. He was honored as the Best Scientific Poster in 2017 for his presentation on “Myeloid Sarcomas and Concurrent Bone Marrow Biopsies May Demonstrate Discordant Mutational Profiles by Massively Parallel Sequencing.”

Dr. Werstein holds unlimited medical licensure in the State of Oregon. He is board-certified in anatomic and clinical pathology by the American Board of Pathology.
