Biography

GPA Laboratories, a Sonic Healthcare Anatomic Pathology Practice, is privileged to include Bassam N. Smir, M.D., as a member of its dynamic medical staff. Dr. Smir has an extensive academic, teaching, and medical professional background.

Dr. Smir earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree (M.B.B.S.) from the University of Jordan Faculty of Medicine in Amman. He served a rotating internship and an internal medicine internship at the Jordan University Hospital before relocating to the United States for his post graduate training. He went on to complete an anatomic and clinical pathology residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, where he served as chief resident in his final year. Subsequently, he completed a hematopathology fellowship at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

Upon completion of his postgraduate training, Dr. Smir began holding key positions in a variety of hospitals and universities. He was a staff pathologist and medical director of the hematology laboratory at the Audie L. Murphy Veterans Administration Hospital in San Antonio, and an assistant professor of pathology at the University of Texas Health Science Center. He served as the medical director of the Women’s Hospital of Greensboro in North Carolina prior to his position with GPA Laboratories.

Over the years, Dr. Smir has developed extensive professional experience. He holds medical research publications and articles in peer-reviewed medical journals, as well as oral and poster presentations at national and international medical conferences. He is an active member of the American Medical Association, American Society for Clinical Pathology, College of American Pathologists, and the Society for Hematopathology.

Dr. Smir holds full medical licensure and is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology, and hematology.
