Biography

CBLPath, a Sonic Healthcare anatomic pathology practice, is pleased to include Rana S. Hoda, M.D., as a member of its dynamic medical staff. Dr. Hoda is a double board-certified pathologist who brings a wealth of professional experience to her position. Her primary clinical focus is cytopathology with specialized expertise in fine-needle aspiration along with urinary and liquid-based cytology.

Dr. Hoda graduated with her medical degree from Dow Medical College in Karachi, Pakistan. Following medical school, she completed her residency in anatomic pathology at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York, and Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, both affiliated with Weill Medical College of Cornell University (formerly Cornell University Medical College). After this, she underwent an oncologic surgical pathology fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, NY, where she studied under notable oncological pathologists, Drs. Juan Rosai and Paul Peter Rosen. She then completed a fellowship in cytopathology at Montefiore Medical Center—Albert Einstein College of Medicine under the guidance of one of the pioneers of cytopathology, Dr. Leopold G. Koss.

Dr. Hoda has considerable experience in teaching and academia. She served as a lecturer of pathology at the Hospital of University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia. Following this, she’s held numerous additional appointments at various medical colleges. She served as an assistant professor, associate professor, and professor of pathology, director of cytopathology, and director of cytopathology fellowship training program at three major academic institutions: the Medical University of South Carolina at Charleston, the University of Rochester, and Weill Cornell Medical Center—New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Dr. Hoda has an extensive research background. She has published more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific articles, several chapters, and five textbooks. The topics of her books include thyroid cytology, urinary cytology, gynecologic cytology, and liquid-based preparations. She sits on the editorial boards of several prestigious scientific journals, including Diagnostic Cytopathology, Journal of American Society of Cytopathology, and Cytojournal. Dr. Hoda directed the annual cytopathology educational conferences at the Medical University of South Carolina and the Weill Cornell Medical Center from 2000-2016. She has remained active on the regional, national, and international lecture circuit and continues to lecture at various professional pathology conferences.

Dr. Hoda is an active member of several professional societies. These include the American Society of Cytopathology, the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, and American Society of Clinical Pathologists, among others.

Dr. Hoda holds full medical licensure and is double board certified in anatomic pathology and cytopathology by the American Board of Pathology.
