Biography

Arizona Dermatopathology, a Sonic Healthcare dermatopathology practice is privileged to include Karen E. Warschaw, M.D., as a valued member of our medical staff. Dr. Warschaw has an extensive academic and professional background, complemented by distinguished military service.

Dr. Warschaw graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. She went on to receive her medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis. Here, she subsequently served a three-year internal medicine residency, followed by a three-year dermatology residency at the Wilford Hall Medical Center of Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. She later completed her fellowship training in dermatopathology at Indiana University in Indianapolis.

During her postgraduate training, Dr. Warschaw began service in the United States Air Force, where she served for thirteen years, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and serving as Chief of Dermatopathology at the Wilford Hall Medical Center. She was also responsible for training fellow service members and medical students at Sheppard Air Force Base, Brooke Army Medical Center, and the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio; for the former, she was voted Instructor of the Year three years consecutively.

In 2001, Dr. Warschaw joined the dermatology staff at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona, where she was Associate Professor of the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine for seven years. During this time, she was twice named Teacher of the Year. Here, she was also the Associate Director of the Dermatology Residency Program, as well as Chair and Vice-Chair of the Department of Dermatology. She has worked as a Staff Dermatopathologist with Arizona Dermatopathology since 2011, where she continues to train M.D. and D.O. residents as part of the medical education program.

Dr. Warschaw is a member of eight professional medical societies, such as the American Medical Association and the American Society of Dermatopathology. She holds full medical licensure in six states, including Arizona, Minnesota, Ohio, and Oregon. She is board-certified in dermatopathology, dermatology, and internal medicine.

Dr. Warschaw has authored and coauthored more than 40 abstracts, articles, and book chapters for peer-reviewed journals and textbooks. She is also a reviewer for three medical journals, including the Journal of Cutaneous Pathology, and she has given dozens of lectures and presentations at national and international medical conferences.
