Biography

ProPath, a Sonic Healthcare anatomic pathology practice, is privileged to include Gustavo A. Alvarez-Paiva, M.D., as a part of its dynamic medical staff. Dr. Alvarez-Paiva is a board-certified pathologist who brings professional medical and leadership experience to his position, along with multiple publications. His specialty is gastrointestinal pathology. 

Dr. Alvarez-Paiva earned his medical degree from the Jose Maria Vargas Medical School, Central University of Venezuela in Caracas. He served a residency in anatomic pathology at Washington University, Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, where he held the position of chief resident. This was followed by a fellowship in surgical pathology at the same institution. He then completed a fellowship in gastrointestinal and liver pathology at Weill Cornell Medical College and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, New York. 

Dr. Alvarez-Paiva started as a gastrointestinal pathologist at Poplar Healthcare in Memphis, Tennessee. During this time, he was also a gastrointestinal and laboratory director at Gastroenterology Associates in Gainesville, Georgia. Prior to joining ProPath as a pathologist, he was a gastrointestinal pathologist and laboratory director at Gateway Endoscopy in Chesterfield, MO, and at Gastrointestinal Associates in Cape Girardeau, MO. 

Dr. Alvarez-Paiva has peer-reviewed articles published in the American Journal of Clinical Pathology and Modern Pathology, as well as a chapter in the Washington Manual of Surgical Pathology, 1st edition.

Dr. Alvarez-Paiva is a member of the Gastrointestinal Pathology Society and the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology.

Dr. Alvarez-Paiva holds full medical licensure and is board certified in anatomic pathology.
