Biography

Cunningham Pathology, a Sonic Healthcare anatomic pathology practice, is pleased to include Virginia A. Miller, D.O., as a part of its dynamic medical staff. Dr. Miller is a triple board-certified pathologist with professional diagnostic and teaching experience and an extensive list of publications.

Dr. Miller graduated from The Ohio State University in Columbus with a Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology. After her bachelor’s degree, she spent a year at the Cabell Huntington Hospital School of Cytopathology in Huntington, West Virginia, becoming an ASCP-certified cytotechnologist. She earned her medical degree at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Athens, Ohio. She completed her anatomic and clinical pathology residency at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center in Lexington. Dr. Miller completed three residencies. The first in cytopathology at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. This was followed by a bone and soft tissue fellowship at the renowned University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and a dermatopathology fellowship at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. She has also had additional training in dermatopathology, including clinic and Mohs surgery experience, at the Dermatology Associates of Kentucky in Lexington.

Dr. Miller brings robust professional and teaching experience in a variety of settings. She first worked as a medical assistant in the West Virginia State Prison System at the Lakin Correctional Facility for Women in West Columbia. She’s had several teaching appointments. She was an assistant professor of pathology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center working full-time on the bone and soft tissue and melanoma service. Dr. Miller has sat on multiple weekly tumor boards including pediatric oncology, melanoma, and orthopedic oncology, the last at UPMC. She’s taught both residents and fellows in bone and soft tissue pathology and dermatology. Prior to joining Cunningham Pathology, she was a full-time assistant professor of pathology in the Marshall University Department of Pathology, with a focus on general surgical pathology, cytopathology, and dermatopathology. Dr. Miller has a long list of publications and presentations. Her oral presentations include presentations during UPMC grand rounds and several professional organization meetings. She’s had numerous poster presentations at various professional and academic conferences, primarily on oncologic pathology, including conferences for the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology and the American Society of Dermatopathology. She’s published multiple articles in peer-reviewed journals such as the International Journal of Surgical Pathology and Clinical Chemistry, among others.

Dr. Miller holds full medical licensure and is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology, cytopathology, and dermatopathology.
