The History of Sonic Healthcare

Sonic Healthcare was listed on the Australian Securities Exchange in April 1987, with a single pathology company—Douglass Laboratories in Sydney’s northern suburbs.

Through a series of strategic acquisitions, Sonic expanded its presence from Sydney to Adelaide, before establishing a national footprint through the acquisition of the SGS group in 1999.

The SGS purchase also established Sonic as both an international operator, and a diversified healthcare company, with laboratories and a radiology practice in New Zealand. The acquisition of The Doctors Laboratory in the UK in 2002 spearheaded our international expansion, followed by the entry into Germany in 2004 and the USA in 2005. We also expanded into primary care clinics in 2004 with the part-purchase of the Independent Practitioner Network (IPN) – the largest network of general practice clinics in Australia.

Fast forward to today, and Sonic Healthcare is a medical powerhouse, employing over 30,000 staff in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Ireland and the United States.
