Biography

Consultants in Laboratory Medicine, a Sonic Healthcare anatomic pathology practice is honored and privileged to include F. Michael Walsh, MD, MBA, CPE, FCAP, FACPE (Distinguished) – our Founder, President and Managing Director – as a member of our medical staff. Dr. Walsh has an impressive academic background with extensive professional experience.

Dr. Walsh graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. He then earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, where he graduated Valedictorian with highest distinction. He received his Master of Business Administration degree from the Fairleigh Dickinson University in Rutherford, New Jersey.

Following a rotating internship, he served a four-year anatomic and clinical pathology residency, both at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Here, he was evaluated among the top 1% of physicians four times, and was awarded the Best Instructor Award three years in a row. During this time, he also served as Assistant to the Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare as part of the White House Fellowship Program. He subsequently completed a clinical chemistry/chemical pathology fellowship at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda. Throughout his postgraduate training, Dr. Walsh served as a member of Medical Corps, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

Dr. Walsh has since held a number of key positions in hospitals, practices and universities over a career that has spanned more than four decades. He was Assistant Professor of Pathology at the Uniform Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, and the Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC. He later served for seven years as Clinical Associate Professor of Pathology at the Medical College of Ohio in Toledo, among several other academic appointments. He is currently Clinical Assistant Professor of Pathology at the University of Toledo College of Medicine, a position he has held for more than a decade.

Dr. Walsh has been Chairman of the Department of Pathology at both the Toledo Hospital and ProMedica Health Systems for over 30 years. For the latter, he also serves as Medical Director of the Clinical Laboratories, having integrated 12 hospitals into that health system. He has held dozens of committee appointments at hospitals such as St. Agnes Hospital, St Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, and the Toledo Hospital, where he was President of the Medical Staff and a member of the Board of Trustees.
